Into the 90's...flying trikes in Australia now legal.
Flying trikes in the 90's was exciting, adventurous and the period that these awesome machines became recognised as a legal aviational activity, in Australia....!
The humble powered hang glider of the 80's evolved to recognition as a 'Weightshift Controlled Aeroplane' under CASA Requirements.
The flexwing microlight industry was growing & moving into aerodromes across Australia. During the mid 90's there were some twenty or more microlight (Powered Hang Gliding) flying schools operating and training students to fly these simple safe machines.
Acceptance
Obviously, with the freedom to mix it with the heavier metals in the aviation world... Microlight Design Certification became compulsory for flexwing microlight manufacturers. In brief, the Civil Aviation Authority of Australia implemented Civil Aviation Order 95.32 which outlined the design, operational and administration requirements for weightshift controlled aeroplanes in Australia.
Acceptance of trikes, microlights in Australia was a big thing in the 90's. Fredrick Hogarth from the UK was a friend and ....
As HGFA National Coaching Director, Chris created and implemented the HGFA pilot licence system and flight training syllabus methods we now accept to be standard practice during this period of industry growth. Recognition achieved with awards as HGFA Instructor of the Year 1994 and AUF Ultralighter of the Year 1998 for tangible and practical contributions to the Australian weightshift flexwing industry.
Delta flexwing development
The 90's was a period of improved performance of delta flexwings microlights with high powered Rotax engines, intercoms for better cockpit communication and the ability to operate from licenced aerodromes with a VHF radio. The world of weightshift controlled aeroplanes became recognised as a growth sport aviation industry.
In Australia, during the eighties and into the early nineties as Managing Director of Airborne Windsports - Chris gained considerable experience and knowledge with the certification of the Airborne Edge. After some ten years with this company, Chris moved on to establish - Flyright Aviation in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales. In the continual search of the safest microlights, Chris began importing the English Pegasus aircraft in 1991, which was the stepping stone to establishing the Australian Distributorship for Air Creation - France.
In December of 1994, Chris commenced the certification acceptance of the Air Creation product range with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority of Australia. The certification process of CASA acceptance for International flexwing microlight designs during the 90's was very difficult. There were particular CASA Regulations and abstract politics during the 90's and into 2000 which indirectly restricted the importing ability of many microlight importers in Australia.
Evolution
The delta flexwing microlight of the 90's has evolved considerably from the earlier paddock bashers, and today the microlight industry is an accepted real form of sport aviation flying. The weightshift controlled aeroplane, microlight, trike is a recreational flyinng vehicle that is affordable, transportable and reasonably priced
Many student pilots began to fly in the 90's... and are still flying today. Maybe you are ready for a new challenge?
